the Mechanics

Matteo

I started learning bikes at Bike Pirates, spending two years getting my hands dirty and falling in love with the craft. Between 19 and 23, I rode from Toronto to Miami twice, and later cycled from Mexico to Guatemala, fixing my bike as I went. I spent a year working at Brooks Bike Shop just outside New Orleans, then returned to Toronto to wrench through the winter at MEC. In 2014, I launched my own mobile repair business — and I’ve been learning, riding, and growing ever since.

I’ve been working on bicycles for what feels like a solid lifetime — or at least half of mine (you get the idea). It’s been over ten years since my mum told me to head over to Bike Pirates and build myself a bike. It was either that or walk — she’d had enough of paying for the TTC. I remember those early days clearly — a lot of trial and error, a few tears, and bikes that felt impossibly finicky. They can be wild, unpredictable machines with no sympathy for the mechanic trying to make sense of them. Bottom brackets, wheel truing, and all those tiny moving parts — I even wrote a song about my frustration. But somehow, I kept going. And now, here we are.

Julien

From racing raindrops down the hills of Provence as a fearless kid to flying through Toronto’s streets on two wheels, bikes have always been part of my story. I really got into wrenching during long-distance rides — fixing breakdowns on the fly and learning fast, because the road doesn’t wait. Since then, I’ve spun wrenches at a downtown shop, revived vintage beauties for collectors across Ontario, and kept countless city riders rolling smooth. These days? I keep Toronto cruisin’ and bruisin’, one bike at a time.

Arne

My obsession with wheels started early — a little red pedal car I rode into the ground before I even hit five. From the moment I got my first real bike, I was hooked on riding, fixing, and pushing the limits of what I could build. The “Big Wheel” sealed the deal. Pedal power wasn’t just fun — it was freedom. While studying Mechanical Engineering, I brought that passion into my projects, building a recumbent trike one year and a tube chassis dune buggy the next. Since then, I’ve been all-in — designing, engineering, and prototyping everything from custom pedal machines to powered vehicle concepts. Always chasing that perfect ride.
